The Project
Inspired by the Seminar Vancouver Walking and Douglas Coupland’s book City of Glass, the idea for the photo-project Considering Chemnitz developed. During the seminar, the concept of the flâneur was especially interesting. Thus, the hypothesis developed that Chemnitz is a proper ground for flâneurie. The aim of this project is to combine the concept of the flâneur with photographs of Chemnitz. In order to do so, the photogapher became the flâneur and vice versa.
First, the concept of the flâneur and its original meanig will be explained. Further on, I will present Chemnitz from three different points of view, which will be described in more detail below. In the end there will be a short summary whether it is possible to be a flâneur these days and whether it is possible to slip into this role in Chemnitz.
The following subcategories will be presented with the help of photographies: People in the City, Landscape vs. Cityscape and Strolling the City at Night. Own photographs will be interpreted and compared to Douglas Coupland's photos in his book City of Glass. The aim of this project is not to copy his photographies but to create unique and comparable photographs of Chemnitz which are modelled on Coupland's photographs of Vancouver.
With this project, Chemnitz will be presented from a point of view which scarcely anybody can enjoy these days. Due to the fact that nowadays everyone rushes and hurries from A to B there is no time for flâneurie. It is assumed that we observe our environment from a different perspective when watching it through a camera lens. The focus will be on the object which was photographed and nothing else around is able to deflect our attention. Everybody can slip into the role of the flâneur and can follow the photographer through Chenitz while enjoying the advantage of sitting at home and surfing the Internet.
